AV Receiver Buyers Guide

Things to think about:

1.
Unless you are buying your speakers as part of a package with the receiver, you will need to think about the technical specifications of the speakers and receiver. Matching the amplifier and speakers can be an issue to consider before you buy. Go to the following guides if you need to understand more about amplifier power specifications and speaker impedance matching.
2.
Does the receiver have the right connections for all of your external devices? For example, DVD player, Blu-ray player, Xbox, PS3, cable TV box etc. Do you understand how each device will connect to your receiver?
3.
What type of surround sound system do you want - 5.1, 7.1, 7.2? The receiver must support these. Go to the guide to surround sound setup for more details if you're not sure what these are.
4.
If you want to hear Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio from your Blu-ray player, will the Blu-ray player do the decoding or do you want the receiver to decode the audio on-board? Go here for more on decoding Blu-ray audio formats.
5.
If you have an excellent stereo amplifier are used to high quality stereo reproduction of music, then you may need to spend a bit more on an AV receiver if you want it to handle both movies and music. For most people, an entry level model will provide a more than adequate sound for both.

Click on each product link to get more technical information on each receiver - to find user reviews and ratings - and also to add the product to your shopping cart.
