As the name suggests, these speakers are designed to be small enough to fit easily into most living areas (on a bookshelf or wall brackets), but large enough to produce quality sound with a good high and low frequency reproduction.
They are commonly used as a stereo pair for listening to stereo music, but they can also be used in a multichannel system. In surround sound systems, they would usually provide the front left and right audio, and maybe the surround audio too (either in a 5.1 or 7.1 system).
