Connecting Sony LED TV to receiver and blu-ray

My sony 5.1 receiver doesn't have an HDMI connection. My sony 50" led TV has HDMI, and I also have a sony blu-ray dvd. Can I use an hdmi cable from bluray to tv, and then use an optical cable to the receiver?

Hi

You certainly can. The good thing about modern AV devices is there are usually a few different ways to connect everything together. You just have to decide which is the best way for the equipment you have.

The only thing you will lose is HD audio from your Blu-ray to the receiver, as this cannot be sent over optical connections. But you will still get standard 5.1 surround sound which still sounds pretty good.

By connecting everything directly to the AV receiver, you also get a slightly simpler setup which can be controlled from one place. However, there is nothing wrong in connecting devices directly to the TV if you hardware dictates this.

All the best.
