Down-firing sub woofers and sound problems

My question is regarding using a down-firing sub woofer. If you have a down firing sub woofer on a high pile carpet, does the carpet muffle the sound? If it does, what should you do to correct the problem?

Hi

No, it won't really muffle the sound as it is the bass frequencies we are dealing with here. You are more likely to hear a problem if you are damping the high frequencies too much.

In fact, the high pile may help to control the bass in the room quite nicely, because a room with too many hard surfaces can cause problems in controlling the bass frequencies.

Having said that, if you do find the bottom end too 'flat' in your room for your taste, then you could try to place the sub on a hard surface. I have heard of some people putting the speaker on a marble slab which will help to reflect the bass out into the room better.

As with all these things, use your ears to decide if you like the sound in the room, and try to adjust it to suit your taste.

Hope that helps.
