DVI to HDMI cable - and HDCPby Anonymous
Can I use a DVI to HDMI cable to connect my pc to a TV for normal home use - word, games, email, etc - without bothering about HDCP? Most of the uses you mentioned should be fine and you will have no problem with HDCP over a DVI to HDMI cable. The only thing that may be a problem is games. If they are HDCP protected then you will need to be sure that both your HDMI and DVI devices are enabled for HDCP. The DVI device may not be as it is optional over DVI. Basically, there are certain sources of digital audio and video that are encoded with HDCP protection to prevent people making perfect digital copies of them. The most common source is a Blu-ray movie. In order to play this source at the highest resolutions, both the player and the display device need to be enabled for HDCP. If they are not, then playback will be limited to lower resolutions or analog connections. Therefore, things like viewing the output of your laptop/PC will be fine for day-to-day uses. It is only if you try to watch a Blu-ray movie (for example) over this connection that you will need to make sure your devices are enabled for HDCP. Hope that helps.
