Floor standing speakers are designed for people who want the best audio reproduction.
Also known as tower speakers, they contain a number of different speakers which enable the unit to produce a very accurate sound.
Different parts of the audio spectrum will have a dedicated speaker. So a typical floorstander will contain one (or more) large speakers for the low bass, one or two mid-range transducers, and also smaller speakers for high frequencies.
One of the main advantages of a tower speaker, is they are large enough to accommodate a big speaker for the low end frequencies. Really low bass frequencies require a large speaker (which is why subwoofers are so big).
They are great for stereo audio, and in surround sound systems they would be used as the front left and right speakers - and possibly the rear surround speakers if you have the space (and budget!).
