What is an HDMI splitter?
A basic splitter allows you to send the same video/audio signal to more than one destination. For example, it might have 1 input and 5 outputs (1x5), which would let you to send the signal from your Blu-ray player to five different TVs/projectors in your home.
It may also be known as a distribution amplifier.
If you want a more powerful setup, some models have multiple inputs as well as more than one output (e.g. 3x4 - 3 inputs and 4 outputs). In this instance, the device can act as a switch as well as a splitter. In other words, you can transmit more than one input device - Blu-ray, cable TV and PS3 - to your different TV screens.
Similarly, you can also buy a device with multiple inputs and outputs, but which will also allow you choose which input gets sent to which output. This type of device is known as an HDMI matrix.

Things to consider:
- Consider more inputs/outputs than you need for future equipment
- Some models provide powered amplification to boost the signal over longer cable runs (10m+)
- Make sure the splitter supports the HDMI version of your devices - 1.3, 1.4, HDCP etc.
- Ensure it will pass full 1080p if you need this
- Does it pass all the audio formats you require? e.g Dolby Digital or Dolby TrueHD
- For a model with multiple inputs, you can usually switch between your input devices either with a remote control, by pressing a button on the device or automatically when it detects an input
