What is an HDMI splitter?

Also known as a distribution amplifier. A basic splitter allows you to send the same TV signal to multiple destinations. For example, it may have 1 input and 3 outputs (1x3), to allow you to send the same feed from your cable TV box to three different TVs in your home.

Some models may have more than one input in addition to multiple outputs (e.g. 2x3 - 2 inputs and 3 outputs). This allows the device to act as a switch as well as a splitter. Or in other words you can send more than one input device, such as your cable TV box and Blu-ray player, to your different screens.

A more powerful device with multiple inputs and outputs, that also allows you select which input gets sent to which output, is known as an HDMI matrix.

Buying Guide

Things to consider:

• For longer cables runs (over 10m), you may need powered signal amplification
• Allow extra inputs and outputs for future expansion
• Does if support full 1080p video? (if you need this)
• Does it pass all the audio formats you need? e.g. DTS 5.1 or DTS-HD Master Audio
• Make sure the splitter supports the HDMI version of your devices - 1.3, 1.4, HDCP etc.
• If you buy a model with multiple inputs, you can usually switch between your input devices either automatically, with a remote control or by pressing a button on the device
