What is an HDMI switcher?
A switch box allows you to add extra devices to a TV or AV receiver that has run out of HDMI inputs.
A basic switch has two or more inputs and one output (sometimes more). Therefore, for example, you could connect four HDMI devices into a TV with only one input. They will essentially share the same input.
A switcher with 2 inputs and one output would be called a 2x1 switch - and 4 inputs with 1 output a 4x1 switch.
On some models you may get more than a single output, allowing you to output the signal to more than one TV screen or projector. These models operate like a switch and a splitter in one device. You can also get more advanced HDMI matrix switches which allow you to choose which input gets sent to which output.
Buying Guide
Things to think about when looking for HDMI switches:
- To select the correct source to watch, there are three main options - automatically, by pressing a button on the box or by using a remote control. Automatic switching is usually easier - but also slightly more expensive - and the other methods can sometimes be more reliable
- To work fully with your equipment, the switch should fully support the HDMI version of your devices - 1.3, 1.4 etc
- Consider buying more inputs than you need for future devices
- Make sure it will pass the audio formats you require - Dolby/DTS 5.1 or high-definition audio
- Do you need to send full 1080p video? Make sure it supports this
- Powered signal amplification may be required for long cable runs (10m+)
