- Video Switchers Buying Guide

Welcome to our HDMI switcher store.

Whatever type of switch you are looking for, you will find plenty of choices here. You can also check out ratings and reviews for each item.

What is an HDMI switch?

A basic switch has multiple inputs and one output. Therefore, for example, you can connect three HDMI devices into a TV with only one input.

You would use a switch in any situation where you have run out of HDMI inputs and need to connect more devices.

A switch with 3 inputs and one output would be called a 3x1 switch - and 5 inputs with 1 output a 5x1 switch (you get the idea!).

Some switches have more than one output to connect to more than one display (for example, a 3x2 switch), and can operate as both a switch and a splitter - and some more advanced models with multiple outputs would be referred to as a matrix switch.

Buyers Guide

Things to consider when looking for a video switcher:

  • Allow extra inputs for expansion in the future
  • Does it pass your audio as well as the video signal? Dolby 5.1 or HD audio?
  • Make sure the switch supports the HDMI version of your devices - 1.3, 1.4 etc.
  • Do you need it to support full 1080p video?
  • If you need long cables (10m+), you may need the device to boost the output signal
  • There are three main ways of switching between inputs - automatic detection, by using a remote control or by manually pressing a button on the device. An auto-switch is usually easier to work with, but will generally cost more - however the other methods can sometimes prove to be more reliable
