Mixing 4 Ohm and 8 Ohm speakers in the same cabinet

by Gary
(Tucson, AZ.)

These are 4 Ohm speakers. I found a pair of DCM KX 12 2nd series speakers with a bad 12 but the rest is good shape. These are an 8 Ohm speaker. Then I have a pair of DCM KX 12's and the kids tore the cone off one of the 12's and put a hole in the mid.

Question is, can I inter change the 8 Ohms speaker parts with the 4 Ohm speakers in one cabinet and leave the other speaker @ 4 Ohm? They are connected to a Yamaha MX1000 amp.

Thank You for any HELP.

Hi

I'll be honest, I don't know much about building speakers.

However, I would say the important aspect would be that your amplifier will support 4 ohm speakers. Check your manual to make sure.

If it does, then I guess there won't be a problem. It will be fine with the 8 ohm speaker if 4 ohm is ok.

Not much more I can suggest here.

Here's a quality forum with an area dedicated to building your own speakers:

Maybe you could ask there, and let us know how you get on.

All the best.
