No 5.1 surround when i play blu rays

I have just purchased a blu ray player but it wont play 5.1. When i want to watch a blu ray it will only give me sound in pro logic, it will play all my dvds in 5.1 but not my blu rays.

My amp is about 10 years old, but i am running the blu ray player though coaxial and this is the second blu ray player so i know its not the player.

Can anyone help please.

Hi

It sounds like your Blu-ray player is downmixing surround sound to stereo. You should go into the audio settings for the player and check what options are selected. Most people will connect a Blu-ray player via HDMI, so you need to check that your player is set correctly for 5.1 audio output over coaxial.

Also, check which audio soundtrack you are playing on the Blu-ray disc itself. It may default to playing a high resolution track like Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio, which you cannot play over a coaxial connection.

If this is the case, you will be able to select the standard DD 5.1 or DTS surround soundtrack.

You should always post the make and model of your player - it makes it easier to check the manual!

Check the articles linked below if you don't understand the different types of Blu-ray audio formats.

Hope that helps.
