No sound with Onkyo HT-R548 and Sony Bravia KDL-40V3000 TV

I'm pulling my hair out as I can't get any sound out of my AV whilst, supposedly, connected correctly to my TV. HDMI cable has been connected from HDMI assignable to lowest numeric HDMI in input on the TV (in fact all 3 inputs at various times). I have also purchased a Onkyo blue ray player which will play and sound is given on the surround system, but my TV seems not to recognised by the AV.

Hi

Are you saying you are trying to send audio from the TV into the Onkyo HT-R548 AV receiver?

I think you are.

If so, then you won't be able to do this via an HDMI cable. Sending audio from a TV into an AV receiver over HDMI is a relatively new feature. You need to use the 'audio return channel' feature of HDMI 1.4 to do this.

Whilst your Onkyo receiver has this feature, your TV doesn't. Therefore you won't be able to send audio from the TV down the HDMI cable to the AV receiver.

However, it looks like your Sony KDL-40V3000 has an optical audio output. If so, you can connect your TV into the AV receiver with an optical cable and you should get audio this way.

All the best.

No Audio with Onkyo HTIB and Samsung HDTV
by: Dave

THINK I'VE LOST SOME HAIR THIS WEEKEND! I have an older Samsung HDTV (without ARC) and a new Onkyo HTIB (3300). I have no audio after connecting the HDMI cables and optical digital as shown in the Onkyo diagram. I also have a Pace DVR box from Brighthouse, though it is also an older model (5 years old?). I was able to get the bluray working, but not cable TV.

No sound

So you have sound and picture from the Blu-ray, but not cable TV and the DVR?

Does your cable TV have a box with audio and video outputs? If so, then you should just need to connect the cable box into the Onkyo HTiB via HDMI just like the Blu-ray player (assuming the cable box has HDMI).

If you have done this already, make sure the cable TV box outputs audio over HDMI. Some only send the picture over HDMI and you have to use optical or coaxial for the audio.

Hope that helps.
