Onkyo TX-NR708 and listening to TV in 5.1 surround sound

I am planning to buy an Onkyo TX NR708 AV receiver. I understand that in order to process a stereo audio signal & create a virtual 5.1 surround sound effect, one needs either the Dolby Pro Logic II or the DTS Neo:6 processing format.

The Onkyo TX NR 708 has Dolby Pro Logic IIz, Dolby True HD & Digital Plus & DTS HD Master Audio processing formats.

Will I still be able to hear a virtual surround sound when I am watching TV (through my Virgin set top box)?

I've never dealt with "virtual" surround; but, try to verify that the dialog is audible, especially when the actors speak in low tones, or whispering

You certainly will. Connect your Virgin box into the receiver via HDMI. Your receiver will automatically play a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack - although there aren't many, mainly on the HD channels.

For every stereo audio signal (most TV shows), you can choose on your receiver to listen in 2-channel stereo or to use one of the 'virtual' surround formats like Dolby Pro Logic II or DTS Neo:6.
