I have a Pioneer A-7 stereo amplifier as part of my system. My question is, how can I hook it up to my Denon AVR-687 receiver? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi

Let me come right back at you with another question. Why do you want to connect your Pioneer stereo amplifier to your Denon AV receiver?

Firstly, your Denon AV receiver is a good quality receiver, and so you should get a pretty good sound with it. Some people think that because it is a surround sound receiver, that they can't use it for stereo. Maybe you are under this impression too?

If you play a stereo source through your AV receiver (let's say a music CD), then your AV receiver will play it back in stereo through the front left and right speakers only. That is unless you select a listening mode which makes it create a pseudo-surround sound mix. Go here for our guide to surround sound formats if you need more information on this.

If you want to use your Pioneer stereo amplifier just for music because you think it has a better sound than the AV receiver, then you could use it in a standalone stereo setup with separate speakers and CD player.

Another option depends on the capabilities of your Denon. If it has pre-out connections then you can send the front left and right pre-outs from the Denon to the L/R inputs on the Pioneer. This would mean the Denon would control the volume and the Pioneer would amplify the front left/right speakers. I can't find a manual for the Denon right now so I'm not sure if it has pre-out connections.

I hope that answers your question.

All the best.
