Recommend me an AV receiver

I'm looking to upgrade my current Amp (Sony STR-DE375) as it does not do what I want it too. Basically, I need an amp that will put a standard stereo type sound through the rear speakers if needed and not just the surround type output (if that makes sense).

I've got about a £300 budget.

There are a few receivers that have a listening mode which sends stereo audio around all the surround speakers (5.1 or 7.1).

Is that what you mean?

If so, these two AV receivers have that facility, are in your budget and are decent quality.

Yamaha RXV 467 AV Receiver

The Onkyo receiver has a mode called 'All Channel Stereo' and the Yamaha has a sound field program called '7 channel stereo'. Different name, same thing. They will also have the other standard listening modes like Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS Neo:6. Check out the links below to find out more details on these.

If you look around, I'm sure you will find other receivers that fit the bill.
