Recommended AV Receiver for In-Ceiling speakers and Blu-Ray movies
by Marcos
I have an ht-in a box and would like to upgrade for a standalone dedicated receiver. Room is small. Speakers are supposed to be in-ceiling (wife factor), Polk series (all of them). Mainly, my needs are for blu-ray movies (80%), music (10%) and games (10%). I see that home-cinema-guide.com advices Pioneer 1020, Yamaha 667 and Denon 2311. Which one would be the best choice for my case? Hi Firstly, I didn't get the attachment, so we'll have to guess your layout! For a smallish room, you shouldn't need anything too powerful. The main thing to check is that the specifications of your speakers will be supported by the receiver. Power, impedance for example. If they are fairly standard Polk speakers then I would expect most receivers will be fine. The recommended AV receivers are all mid-range models. These should provide a good balance between cost and features for the majority of people. Other things to consider are any extra features you might want - like dedicated iPod connection or S-Video connections for older devices like video cameras. Don't buy a more expensive model if the extra cost is just for features that you don't need. Taking all that into account, it will come down to the sound of the amp. All the different makes will sound different to each other, and it may just come down to which you prefer. If this may be important to you, then try to demo some models if you can. However, if you mainly want good movie performance, then Onkyo receivers are well known for good movie reproduction. Although any of the major manufacturers will provide a good quality receiver which should be an improvement over your HT-in-a-box - so I would add Yamaha, Pioneer and Denon to the Onkyo as a make you should consider. Hope that helps. Paul (Site Editor) Feel free to join in this discussion by adding your own comments below...
