In terms of a surround sound system, the term 'satellite' is normally used to refer to small speakers that are placed around the room to give a sense of space to the sound.
While you can use bookshelf or floorstanding speakers as part of this type of setup, smaller satellites used with a subwoofer can provide a really big sound - without taking up too much space in your room.
