Sony blu-ray audio problem

My father's Sony Blu-Ray player is acting wacky. The audio works fine when the menu is up. But when you start the movie there is no audio. So the only way he can hear anything is to use the composite output (inferior to HDMI).

Any ideas?

I will go ahead and say it probably isn't the firmware because if that were the case, there would be no video either and you would see an error message asking to update the firmware.

Hi

It's difficult to make a judgement as you don't say how your sound is being produced.

Are you connecting directly to a TV and using the on-board speakers - or do you have an AV receiver and surround sound?

However, whichever way you do it, it sounds like your sound system cannot playback the type of audio that is being played by default on the movie.

The menu audio is often simple stereo (or sometimes Dolby Digital), which many sound systems will play.

If the default audio for the movie is Dolby TrueHD (for example), then your AV receiver (or TV) may not support this.

On the Blu-ray disc you can select a different audio soundtrack - try picking a different one and see if you hear this.

If you are trying to play a surround soundtrack on stereo speakers, you may have to tell the Blu-ray player to downmix this to stereo (in the audio settings menu).

Also, if you have an AV receiver, try updating its firmware - this may allow you to play different audio formats.

Hope this helps a bit.

All the best.
