Sony NX713 and Onkyo receiver - hdmi connection problem

I have a Sony NX713 46" Tv and an Onkyo receiver. The Sony will not recognise the Hdmi connection to my Panasonic Blu ray player. I have added optical which is fine, but is it true hd sound?

Hi

I'm slightly confused by your submission. You say the Sony TV doesn't recognise the HDMI connection from the Blu-ray player, and then talk about the sound. The sound connection should be going to your Onkyo receiver, not to the TV.

Let's assume you are using 3D on the TV, and that your Onkyo receiver supports 3D signals. If so, then you would connect HDMI from the Blu-ray into the Onkyo receiver, and then from the Onkyo receiver to the TV. Something like this:

Diagram of AV receiver connections with 5.1 surround sound system

This will send sound and picture to the Onkyo.

If the Onkyo doesn't support 3D signals, then from the Blu-ray player you can send one HDMI to the TV for 3D pictures, and another HDMI to the Onkyo for sound (assuming you have a new Panasonic 3D Blu-ray player which has two HDMI outputs).

If you have to use the optical connection into the Onkyo for sound, then you will get 5.1 surround sound but it won't be HD audio.

All the best.

Tv and Blu-ray

My new Sony NX713 will not recognise my Panasonic Blu ray through my Onkyo receiver via the HDMI. I have gone onto settings on the tv and enabled the player but when i try to play it does not work. The player is okay when feed directly into the tv with an optical lead.

Have you any suggestions which might help.

I'm unclear if you are having a problem with picture, sound or both.

If you are trying to send 3D picture signals, make sure your Onkyo receiver is HDMI 1.4, otherwise the 3D signal won't get through to your TV. Alternatively connect directly to the TV for the picture.

The sound should be going directly into the receiver, either via HDMI or optical.

Hope that helps.

HDMI trouble

Hi

It is both. The tv seems to recognise the Blu-ray but the receiver does not. It is an Onkyo TX-SR577.

Hi

The Onkyo TX-SR577 is HDMI 1.3, so won't pass 3D pictures. So if you are having a problem sending 3D pictures through the Onkyo to the TV, then that is your problem.

Connect an HDMI cable direct from the Blu-ray to the TV - this will send 3D pictures.

Then connect HDMI or optical to the receiver for sound. If you have a new 3D Panasonic Blu-ray you will probably have 2 HDMI outputs so use both of these. If you only have 1 HDMI output, send audio to the receiver via an optical connection.

Also, try updating the firmware of the Blu-ray and receiver - consult your manual for this.

All the best.
