A soundbar is a speaker system designed to improve on the sound you get from your TV speakers.
All the speakers are contained in a single bar which is placed along the front of your HDTV.
The point of these speakers is that they require less space, and are simpler to install, than a system with an amplifier and separate speakers. Therefore it can be seen as a middle-ground between using the speakers on your TV - and a full-blown system with separate amplifier and speakers.
Most sound bars will provide good quality stereo sound, and most will also provide some form of virtual surround sound. They use clever signal processing techniques to give the user the impression that they are hearing a movie soundtrack all around the room - just like with a true surround sound setup.
