Welcome to the shop for subwoofer speakers.
A good subwoofer can make a big difference to the sound of your home audio system. If you get the bass right, then you will get the best from all of the speakers in your setup.
Many people get their first subwoofer as part of a surround sound speaker package. However, there are a number of reasons for buying a subwoofer on its own.
For instance, many people will often upgrade individual speakers in their system to higher quality products, and the subwoofer is one area where you can greatly improve the overall sound by upgrading.
Other people will have a 5.0 system with floorstanding speakers (without a sub) but will add a subwoofer to get the really low frequencies that only a dedicated sub can reproduce. Or they may want to add a second subwoofer to make a 5.2 or 7.2 system.
If you are not sure about the common speaker configurations used in a home theater setup, go to the article on surround sound configurations or understanding the role of speakers in home theater systems.
One important thing to understand before you buy is the difference between an active and passive subwoofer - make sure you buy the right type.
