Here's a description to my setup: I have a Philips BDP3100 that connects to an Onkyo TX-SR508 via HDMI - then the Onkyo TX-SR508 connects to a DELL U2410 LCD via HDMI.

Description of Problem
---------------------------
White dots appear at random on my LCD only in the aforementioned setup.

Note: The problem does not appear when I perform a direct connection from Philips BDP3100 to DELL U2410 LCD. Neither does the problem appear when I connect to my cable set-top box to Onkyo via HDMI and Onkyo to LCD via HDMI.

Steps taken in troubleshooting
--------------------------------
1) I tested all my HDMI cables by connecting them one at a time from cable set-top box to Onkyo. No appearance of random white dots. However, random white dots appear regardless of which cable was used when I connect my Blu-Ray to Onkyo to LCD.

2) I tested the HDMI input and output ports. They appear to work fine as images from my cable set-top box are clear (no white dots). This is not the case when I connect my Blu-Ray to Onkyo to LCD

3) Direct connection from Blu-Ray to LCD eliminates the random white dots problem.

Question
------------
Does anyone know what is causing the problem? What should I do to resolve the problem?

Hi

I'm not sure I can be much help to you here. You appear to have done pretty much everything I would try.

To be clear, when you connect the Blu-ray via the Onkyo AV receiver, you get the problem of white dots - but not if you make exactly the same connection using your cable TV box instead? Same cables, same HDMI ports? Make sure you eliminate as many variables as you can by using the same cables and ports.

Are all your HDMI cables high-speed (category 2)?

Are there any other differences between the HDMI connections of your Blu-ray and cable box? Are they both HDMI 1.3 or 1.4 - or are they different?

Do you have any other devices connected to the AV receiver at the same time? Make sure you disconnect everything else and just have one device connected while you test.

Make sure the firmware is up-to-date for all your hardware devices - mainly Blu-ray player and AV receiver.

Have you just bought the Blu-ray or AV receiver? Maybe ask for a replacement model?

Probably not much help. Let us know if you resolve the problem and what the solution was.

Ground loop?
by: Pakito

Could be a ground loop, try to plug the TV on a socket with no ground & see if it fixes the problem.
