Which is better - Vizio XVT473SV or SV472XVT?

Which Led config is better? A vizio xvt473sv that has 640 leds with 160 control blocks and 10 million contrast ratio, or a vizio sv472xvt that has 900 leds with 80 control blocks and 2 million contrast ratio?

Please explain the difference.

Hi

If we are just looking at the numbers you have quoted, then the Vizio XVT473SV comes out on top.

640 LEDs in 160 control blocks totals 102,400 LEDs. This can be compared to the SV472XVT with 900 LEDs in 80 control blocks - which totals 72,000 LEDs.

We can probably assume more LEDs will give the TV a better control over resolution and colour accuracy.

Also, more control blocks should mean they are smaller. This gives an advantage as switching off a control block is the best way to get a completely black colour. You cannot switch off a control block if the picture has some light and some dark areas - therefore with smaller blocks there is less chance that an area of picture will be covered by light and dark.

This should mean the TV has a better contrast ratio - which means the blacks will be blacker and the whites whiter. A good contrast ratio is crucial to a good looking picture.

This is also suggested by the numbers. A contrast ratio of 10 million should look better than one of 2 million.

Having said all that. Don't judge a TV purely on the technical numbers. The numbers may look good on paper, but does the TV actually look any good in practice? The other TV may have better components or just be engineered better.

Always try and check out the TV for yourself, or if that isn't possible read some reviews and see what people are saying about the performance in the real world.

The numbers can be a useful guide, but shouldn't be your only criteria.

All the best.

XVT473SV is better

I purchased the 473 model at Costco, and liked it so much that I went back to purchase another a few days later. I didn't realize Costco made a switch-a-roo from the 473 to the 472 since the price, location on the shelf, packaging and everything looked the same. It wasn't until I tried hanging on TV on the wall that I realized the difference. The 472 is much heavier, the depth is greater, and the picture wasn't as good. The entire design of the back section (where you plug in components) differs too. I was very disappointed with the 472, but ended up keeping it.
