Yamaha RX-V365BL 5.1 Channel AV Receiver HDMI help

by Anonymous

I started reading this page on your site and saw my receiver as the very first picture and I am hoping that I am in the right place for help. The page I was reading was this one - Introduction to the Surround Sound Receiver.

So my current setup is like this:

laptop(HDMI out) ->
xbox 360(HDMI out)->

-> receiver(2 HDMI in, 1 HDMI out, surround sound speakers w/o subwoofer)

-> TV (1 HDMI in)

I want to be able to switch from my laptop to my xbox and have surround sound too, but in the manual it says that the video and audio signal will only go through the HDMI to the tv.

Any ideas or solutions?

Hi Anonymous

I've just had a quick look at the manual for the Yamaha RX-V365BL.

This receiver is designed so that any audio sent through HDMI into the unit is passed straight through to the TV - and will not be heard over the surround speakers.

If you want to hear the laptop and/or the Xbox over the surround sound speakers, you will have to make another audio connection from these devices.

The best option would usually be an optical audio or coaxial audio cable to your receiver and then you would get 5.1 surround sound. However, I'm not sure if you will able to do this with your sources.

An alternative is to connect via analog stereo and you can let the receiver create 'virtual' surround sound with Dolby Pro Logic II or similar.

FYI, I think the Yamaha RX-V465 (and above) does play audio over HDMI - but the model you have doesn't.

Hope that helps.

All the best.

Since this receiver does not send sound thru the hdmi connector. can I also input the optical cable or coax cable to my receiver and still connect with your suggestion of 1 cable connecting all my inputs? My TV is an 37lg60.

HDMI sound

Hi

You will need to make a second connection (optical or coaxial) to get audio into your AV receiver. You'll still need the HDMI to send the picture.

You can either connect the HDMI via the receiver to make switching sources a bit easier (you'll need two HDMI cables for this - one into the receiver and one out to the TV), or you could connect the HDMI straight to the TV and bypass the receiver.

Hope that helps.
