Yamaha rxv565 receiver with 7 polk speakers but little sound

I have a Yamaha receiver with polk 7.1 surround speakers. Do I need an amp or subwoofer? I have to turn it up over half way just to hear the speakers. Please help!

I am not familiar with the RX-V565; hovever, check the "Ohm" rating on your speakers, and make sure your receiver switch (should be on the back of your receiver) is set for the correct rating. If the ratings on your speakers vary; for example, some are 4 Ohm, or some are 6 Ohm and some are 8 Ohm, set the switch to "6 Ohm". Otherwise select the correct setting for which your speakers are rated. This may be the problem.

If your receiver is rated at a rather low wattage, a 12:00 O'Clock (or higher)setting for your volume control may be okay.
