The Best Blu-ray Movies
- Top 10 Titles For Your Collection

Who needs a list of the top 10 best Blu-ray movies to buy?

Well nobody really needs one I suppose, but top 10 lists can be a great source of inspiration when you are stuck for something to buy. They can also make you try something different that you wouldn't usually get - and let's face it, who doesn't like a top ten list?

So, here's my list of the 10 best Blu-rays to buy. There's no scientific research or in-depth analysis here, just a list of my favourites - I might change my mind next week!

Some Blu-ray releases don't look that great in high-definition, and sometimes the 5.1 surround sound is a bit lacking. If they get these two things right, the story is often a waste of 2 hours of your life. However, all the movies here look fantastic, sound fantastic ....and you will want to watch them again and again.

If you don't agree with this list, and think I'm completely crazy by missing out your favourite movie - then fill in the form at the end of the page and tell us what we're missing out on!

10. Casino Royale

Fantastic James Bond movie featuring Daniel Craig as 007. To be honest, I've never been the biggest fan of James Bond movies until this one - but this is terrific.

It brings the James Bond genre to life and replaces the silly stuff of the past with added realism and grit. For me, that makes it the best 007 movie ever made.

If you're a fan of the Sean Connery and Roger Moore classics then you'll still enjoy this - but if you've never much liked 007 movies before, then give this a try.

Great story, superb HD picture and excellent surround sound.

Suitable for: adults only

9. The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight Blu-ray Thumbnail

I had similar feelings about Batman movies as I did about 007. They were ok, a bit of fun, but I never really rated them as fantastic movies.

However, as with Casino Royale, the last two Batman movies have taken the franchise to the next level and stand on their own right as must-see movies. Batman Begins was really good, but was overtaken by this follow-up, The Dark Knight.

The Blu-ray version has to be seen to be believed. The images jump off the screen and the soundtrack is wonderful in Dolby TrueHD. You don't have to be a Batman fan to enjoy this, just a movie fan.

Suitable for: adults only

8. Monsters, Inc.

Monsters Inc Blu-ray Thumbnail

Monsters, Inc. was released in 2001 and has grown into a real family favourite.

This Pixar animation revolves around the monsters of Monstropolis, who need the screams of human children to create power for their city.

The problem is the monsters are actually more scared of the children, and all hell breaks loose when a little girl follows Sulley back into the city.

The Blu-ray 1080p pictures are top notch, and the high-definition 5.1 surround soundtrack is tremendous.

Suitable for: all the family

7. The Bourne Collection

The Bourne Collection Blu-ray Thumbnail

All four movies in the Bourne Collection are available on Blu-ray in this box set - The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum and The Bourne Legacy.

This series of movies just get better with each one - and the first one was pretty darn good to start with. Matt Damon plays a man who is fished out of a stormy ocean one night and doesn't remember who he is.

These fast-paced action movies follow his search to find out his identity, and to find the secrets of his past life.

The high-definition audio soundtracks are superb and the pictures are fantastic in 1080p.

Suitable for: adults only

6. Toy Story

Aha, I knew it wouldn't be long before we got to another Pixar movie. The first movie featuring Woody and Buzz.

When released in 1995, this movie set the benchmark for animation. The CGI graphics were a wonder to behold - and the good thing is, on Blu-ray it's like watching it all for the first time again.

However, there is so much more to this movie than clever computer-generated images. The storyline is engaging from start to finish and there are plenty of laughs to be had on the way. It is so much more than just a kids movie.

Add to that the usual tremendous HD 5.1 surround sound mix and we have another must-have for your collection. No really, you have no choice, you must own this.

Suitable for: all the family

5. Life

Life Blu-ray Thumbnail

Life is the follow up series to Planet Earth from the BBC and David Attenborough. Like Planet Earth, Life is absolutely essential viewing and every home should have a copy of this Blu-ray box set.

In the 10 episodes, this series looks at different types of animals and plants and shows how they have adapted to their environments in order to survive.

The excellent high-definition pictures are a wonder to behold - and it is all topped off with a good surround sound mix and musical score.

Suitable for: all the family

4. Band of Brothers

Band of Brothers Blu-ray Thumbnail

Fantastic. This HBO production is possibly the best World War II drama ever made.

This true story follows the American soldiers from Easy Company through their experiences on the battlefields of Europe - from basic training through to the end of the war.

It's harrowing, frightening, sad and uplifting all at the same time.

There are 10 episodes in all and so this is a box set with plenty of extras and value for money. The 1080p HD picture is superb - and the soundtrack and special effects are wonderful.

If you have a subwoofer, prepare to annoy the neighbours.

Suitable for: adults only

Wall-E Blu-ray Thumbnail

Well there were only three slots left, so I had to squeeze in another Pixar movie!

Follow the adventures of the lovable robot WALL-E, who starts the movie as the last inhabitant on Earth, and ends up finding out where the human race have gone. The visuals are fantastic in high-definition and there are plenty of laughs along the way.

Another interesting feature is there isn't much spoken word throughout the movie, especially at the start! However, the use of sound effects and music is brilliant and the DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack sounds superb.

Love it, love it, love it.

If you haven't seen this yet, then shame on you.

Suitable for: all the family

2. Planet Earth

Planet Earth Blu-ray Thumbnail

So you thought you had seen the end of me demanding that you buy some top quality nature programmes? Wrong!

If you're a fan of natural history programmes, then you must get this.

If you're not the type to sit down and watch boring stuff about animals, plants and the natural world......then you really need to get this.

It's not optional people, it just has to be bought and enjoyed. I don't care if you don't watch this sort of thing - buy it, watch it and then come back and tell me you don't like this stuff. I guarantee I won't be hearing back from many of you.

This BBC production narrated by David Attenborough is the king of nature programmes.

It has some of the most amazing natural history filming ever seen - all in jaw-dropping high-definition. Each episode investigates 11 different habitats for animals and plants around the world - from oceans to deserts to jungles and much more.

Suitable for: all the family

1. Toy Story 2

Toy Story 2 Blu-ray Thumbnail

To be honest, there's an argument for making a top ten Blu-ray movies list just for Pixar - and a separate list for everybody else just to give them a chance! It's hard to find a Pixar movie that falls much below "absolutely fantastic". However, let's have a fair fight and just have one list.

Picking your favourite Pixar Blu-ray movie is tough. They are all built around great stories and have plenty of laughs for all the family. The strong colours in these animation movies really shine in high-definition (and they tend to upscale from DVD pretty well too). The sound is also usually superb, and the high-definition audio formats available on Blu-ray really come to life in your room.

The winner for me is Toy Story 2 (just). It looks amazing, sounds fantastic and is pretty much without fault as a movie. It follows the further adventures of Buzz Lightyear and the gang as Woody is kidnapped by a toy collector and the other toys set out to rescue him.

The Blu-ray transfer highlights the improvements in animation over the original film, and while Toy Story looks great in Blu-ray, this one looks unbelievable.

Suitable for: all the family
