If you want to buy an Onkyo AV receiver, then the first thing you will need to do is narrow down which one is right for you.

Onkyo releases several new receivers each year, so finding a suitable model that suits all your needs can be tricky.

There are three main series to check out when researching an Onkyo AV receiver:

  • RZ Series: high-end models
  • NR Series: mid-range AV receivers
  • SR Series: entry-level receivers

This article compares the models from the NR and SR series.

The receivers are grouped by their year of release and then by the Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP).

You will often be able to find a receiver selling below the MSRP; however, it is an excellent guide to an AV receiver’s place in the market.

The specifications are from the US models, and you may find these vary worldwide, but they are often very similar.

Onkyo NR Series

NR stands for network receiver, and these receivers add networking capabilities to the cheaper SR Series. The NR Series is in the middle of the Onkyo range, so they may provide the perfect balance between cost and features if you are on a strict budget.

Onkyo SR Series

The Onkyo SR series is for those with limited space. They are a slim design that will be easier to install if you don’t have much room to play with. Also, they have fewer features than the bigger models, which can keep down the cost. The SR stands for surround receiver and is an excellent choice if you want to keep the cost down but still have the advantages of an AV receiver.
